Are you thinking about going back to school but feel uncertain because of your age?
You’re not alone! Currently, there are over nine million women enrolled in college, so you’ll be in good company.
However, most people in this age group find it difficult to finish their degrees. Life is already hectic, and dealing with adult responsibilities while trying to go back to school can make you feel like it’s impossible.
I’m here to tell you that it can be done!
In episode twelve of the podcast, I share tips on how you can conquer this. Below are the tips I share, in case you prefer to read instead of listening.
The Season of Sacrifice: My Personal Back-to-College Story
If you remember back in episode one, I shared my life story. A part of that story was about my decision to go back to school.
At the time, I was leaving an abusive relationship that had left me in a really dark place. Not only was I coming out of a toxic situation, but I also had to work, take care of my kids, and find a way to make a better life for all of us.
The best option for me at that time was to send my three children to live with family back in Haiti. This gave me the chance to go back to school so I could provide a better life for them.
And guess what? It worked! Because of my success, I can now share what I did to overcome the challenges and earn my degrees.
Three Things to Do When Going Back to College After 40
While many adults go back to school, research shows that a large percentage of older students do not complete their degrees.
But you don’t have to become a part of that statistic. Here are three tips that I share in the podcast episode to help you succeed.
1. Have a Reason
Why do you want to go back to school? Is it to make more money? To provide a better life for your family? Or do you need a degree to go along with your work experience?
These were all the reasons I wanted to go back to school. Once you start with your purpose, it can help you push through all of those late nights and the moments when you want to give up.
2. Have a Support System
Having a strong support system is key. Studies show that adult learners with support are much more likely to complete their degrees successfully.
Don’t tell yourself that you have no one to help you or that you don’t want to bother anyone. Look for family, friends, or someone in your church who is willing to lend a helping hand.
The extra support will help you out in the long run, and you’ll be happy that you reached out and asked.
3. Become Tech-Savvy
Not knowing how to use Google Docs, Blackboard, or other educational tools can be intimidating. But there are plenty of resources out there to help you.
Whether it’s from the school you’re attending, ChatGPT, or YouTube, you’ll be able to figure it all out.
Go for that Degree, You Can Do It
The main thing I want you to take away from this episode is this: You can do it. Stop thinking you’re too old or that you don’t have the time to go after that degree.
Any time is the right time to go to college. If I can do it, despite every single challenge that came my way, then you can too.
